Amnesty International (AI) Day

It always falls on May 28 every year.

It is a worldwide movement that monitors human rights violations and initiates campaigns against violations.

Amnesty International was founded by British lawyer Peter Benenson in 1961. The inspiration for the establishment of this organization was when he learned of 2 Portuguese students who are sentenced to 7 years for having a drink. Benenson has published an article forgotten prisoners, where he asked readers to express support for imprisoned and tortured people because of their confession or unacceptability to the government. Shortly afterwards, the appeal became an international movement. She worked to protect people who were imprisoned for non-violent expression of their views.

The membership base has started to grow and this has started to work on other human rights issues. The organization was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977. In 1978, the organization won the UN Human Rights Prize.

The basic AI themes are: liberating all prisoners of conscience, stopping torture, stopping violence against women, controlling arms trafficking, abolishing the death penalty, ending extrajudicial executions and forcible disappearances, ending child soldiers practice, protecting human rights defenders, respecting refugee , international justice, freedom of speech on the Internet.
