This day was created in 1946 to honor the invention of a bikini by Parisian engineer Louis Réard.

Bikini inventors are a pair of Frenchmen. Engineer Louis Réard and designer Jacques Heim. In May 1946, at Cannes, they presented as the first two-piece swimsuit called Atome.

However, even smaller swimsuits by Réard are better known, which on July 5, 1946 at a fashion show in the Parisian spa Piscine Molitor. It was a model with triangular brassiere parts without reinforcement and a string of panties where the back part resembled today's pantie style. He named them after the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, where an American nuclear experiment took place 4 days before the show. He wanted to use the symbolism of atomic explosion in the world of women's beach fashion. Because Réard did not find any model to show these swimsuits, the stripper dancer Micheline Bernardini showed these swimsuits. Between journalists and spectators, showing a swimsuit caused a stir and a wave of criticism.

By the end of the 1940s, bikinis were outside the interests of world fashion, and the prohibitions on wearing them on beaches in Spain, Portugal, and Italy were also in place. In the 1950s they were excluded from the Miss World contest.
