International Picnic Day
It always falls on
June 18 every year.
Picnic is a kind
of outdoor dining. It is organized in the open air on a meadow, park, etc. It
is part of family trips or events, gatherings, corporate and other meetings.
For a picnic, food is served in a picnic basket.
The word picnic
(pique-nique) comes from the French language. Allegedly, this type of informal
meal outside has become a popular pastime in France after the revolution. In
the 18th and 19th centuries the picnic was a social event with luxurious meals
and drinks, and their preparation took several days. Picnic also served in
political protests where large groups of people gathered. For example, a
pan-European picnic was held on August 9, 1989, at the Austro-Hungarian border
at Sopron, Hungary. This picnic was part of a revolutionary wave that led to
the abolition of the Iron Curtain.
Today you have the
chance to celebrate this day by eating outdoors in the open with friends or
family.
On June 20, 2009,
the world's largest picnic was held in Lisbon, Portugal, where more than 22,000
people attended the picnic, according to the Guinness Book.
