Waffle Day

It always falls on March 25 every year.

This day is celebrated in Sweden, Norway and to a lesser extent in other countries. It is celebrated on August 24 in the USA. In Sweden, people celebrate Vårfrudagen (Mary's Day) and celebrate 25 March. It is a religious holiday 9 months before Christmas and sounds similar to the Swedish word for Våffeldagen. The name of this holiday was thus created by the garbling of the originally Christian holiday.

The ancient Greeks began making flat cakes between two hot metal plates. During the 13th century, the cakes began to cook between the two hot iron that gave them the appearance. They named them wafla, an old French word that means a beehive.

Swedish waffles are flatter than the well-known Belgian waffles and are mostly made in a special waffle maker that makes heart shaped waffles (look like 4 hearts).

Waffles are made from yeast or non-yeast dough, which is baked between two iron with a typical lattice. Waffles have many forms depending on the type of dough, or iron waffle makers vary according to consistency, size, shape and taste. They can be eaten alone, covered with chocolate, jam, whipped cream, fruit, maple syrup, ice cream, honey, raisins or to taste. They can also be served in a salty version with sour cream, chives, shrimps, cheese, ham, spinach or to taste.

In 1869 Corneliu Swartwout received the first American patent for a waffle iron.

In 1911, the first electric waffle iron was refurbished by General Electric.

Belgian waffles were made and introduced to the world in the United States. In 1964, Maurie Vermersch presented them at the New York Fair as Bel-Gem.
